Glucosamine and Chrondroitin: Reader Comments

Q:  I just read your column about glucosamine and had to write regarding a recent experience with my mother. She was 91 years old and still living alone until last August. She has been on Coumadin since having aortic valve replacement 3 years ago. In July an out of town relative (who is an RN) suggested she take Glucosamine & Chondroitin (G-C) for her arthritis. She is unable to take any of the prescription arthritis medications, as she reacts either with stomach problems or hives.

She had already been taking Osteo Biflex, which is a form of G-C. She didn't remember how long or why she was taking it but, it appeared to have been 2-3 weeks. At about this time, she went in for her monthly protime (a measure of blood clotting) and it was way off -- which was unusual for her. They asked if she was taking any herbal medications. In checking books and the Internet, they found information suggesting that it may interfere with clotting times so suggested she discontinue it or at least be monitored on it.

Three days later she was hospitalized for a stroke. They won't say that the G-C brought it on, but they did say not to take it any more as there was enough evidence to question its use in people on Coumadin.

Please stress to your patients and readers that if they are on prescription medications not to take herbal medications without consulting their physicians. Thank you for your time and for a wonderful, informative column.

A:  Your point is so important. We know from surveys that at least 1/3 of adults in the U.S. use alternative therapies. Some people don't tell their physician because they're afraid of being criticized or told to stop. Other patients just forget to tell the doctor, or don't realize the potential for interactions with other drugs. Even if your doctor doesn't agree with what you're doing, it's safest if he/she is aware of it.
