Latex Paints
Q: I am a professional painter and am working more and more with latex paints. I have heard that long-term exposure to latex paints can be the source of serious health problems and am surprised because oil-based paints seem so much more toxic. How can I best protect myself and my employees?
A: Latex paints are water-based and produce far less in the way of fumes. I spoke with an expert in occupational medicine who was aware of no serious health problems from exposure to latex paints. He also stated that there are no crossover allergic reactions in people who have allergies to latex gloves.
My only other advice is to wear protective masks when using any paint in an aerosol form and maintain some form of ventilation at all times.
